The response to my call for the Freehacker’s Union movement was really good. I received emails from 23 people in about 4 different cities interested in starting a similar chapter. Originally it was just going to be in NYC but I figure we might as well try to make it a global revolution.
Here’s what I’m doing to make that happen:
- Someone hooked up a IRC channel for me on irc.freenode.org that I want everyone to come join so we can hash out our evil plans. I want to keep it a little quiet, so if you are interested and can hack then email me and I’ll shoot you the information.
- I’m setting up a mailing list system that we can use to continue the discussion and to coordinate our activities.
- I’ll be doing a web site for FU that lays out what we come up with as values and describes how to join or start a chapter. I’ll setup a system for people in the chapters to get a mailing list and a wildcard on the site where they can post.
- I’ve got someone working on a logo, which I’ll have everyone take a look at and give their vote. Should happen in a few weeks.
That’s the initial work, so if you’re interested in helping out shoot me an email. I want to do an IRC meeting tomorrow for people to come up with ideas and help out.
One thing I want to do as the first hack is see if we can get these chapters in other cities all connected over the internet live for the first meeting. Any ideas on that are welcome.
