Well, I’ll be at DefCon this year, and I always try to do something fun for the conferences I attend.

Well looks like my rant about the state of open source feed readers hit some sites, so I should put in a few clarifications so people understand what I was looking for more specifically. I’ll do it by answering several of the questions people sent me.

RubyFringe was my last Ruby conference and it was the best conference to go out on. Everything about RubyFringe was great. It was well organized, contained eclectic talks, and supported the weirdness that’s usually hidden at the other conferences.

I’ve been completely fed up with news/feed/rss/atom readers these days. I use Linux as my primary operating system, and I only have a few feeds that I want to rip through quick so I can get to reading the content. Yet, trying to find a reader that doesn’t suck donkey balls has been a chore.

First, I’m organizing a Factor hacking session at Earth Matters on Friday Jan 4th @ 7pm. If you wanna hang out and hack, learn some Factor from a newb like me, and probably go hit a few of the bars down here after, then show up. We’ll be in the back where the tables are with computers because we’re all nerds.

Second, while everyone else spent the day posting my little rant all over the internet and writing their blog posts, I went out to wander the city and see a movie. When I came back (and a little before I left) I decided rather than finish the rant today I would instead reply to every email I was sent. That’s over 100 messages (some long, some short) from people all over.

I must say I’m impressed just how much people liked and identified with this rant. Everyone was very encouraging and really seemed to care. Other people had their own takes on the situation or questions which I answered honestly. I think the best was finding out from a junk yard owner how it’s just like that for him too.

Some things that people probably would like to know before I finish the rant:

  • Yes, I have a job, but I’m very happy people are helping me out by offering work.
  • Yes, I’m perfectly sane and quite alright. Anyone who knows me gets the joke, the rest are just part of the joke.
  • e07e8e6e51bc6d169070b5cb468ca200 (Only Franklin will get that one).
  • I am not blaming Ruby on Rails for all of my troubles. My troubles are my own doing.

This last part is very key, so it’s going in the rant tomorrow. I am 90% responsible for all of my pain and troubles during the last year. My rant is more about how getting stuck in the Rails community made it much harder to recover from my own dumbassery, and how fucking annoying the dumb ass pricks really are.

When I say that “Mongrel killed my career” keep in mind that I wrote Mongrel, started to suspect it would kill off my work chances, and kept working on it because I was attached to it. Recruiting a group of solid coders to maintain Mongrel for me was probably the most important change I made, both for myself and for everyone who benefits from my software.

So, when I post the continuation of the rant in the next few days, keep this in mind. I’m not looking for a pity party, just looking to turn the kitchen lights on so the cockroaches run under the fridge.

Enjoy your day everyone!
